Claire Cox

Head of Inheritance Disputes & Senior Associate

I am an experienced disputes lawyer who specialises in inheritance disputes, trust disputes and contentious probate. These include claims against estates, such as disputes between Executors or Trustees, estate administration issues, breach of trust, and claims around Will validity. My work often involves the contesting of a Will. I am also an expert in dealing with contentious trusts outside of inheritance disputes, for example in cases where an individual considers that they have an interest in a property not legally owned by them (known as TOLATA claims).

I also have experience with property disputes, debt recovery, professional negligence, insurance and contractual disputes. I have been a litigator since 2009 and consider myself to be pragmatic, thorough and approachable, but also tenacious.

I am also an Associate Member of ACTAPS, (The Association of Contentious Trusts and Probate Specialists) which is the industry recognised qualification for lawyers specialising in contentious trust and probate work. There are many solicitors who deal with these types of disputes as part of a mixed caseload of a variety of different matters, without specialist knowledge. These claims are very complex, niche and often unpredictable. I have had clients approach me who have had this experience and have found serious errors have been made, one of which involved needing the Court’s permission to bring a claim outside of the legal time limit. For this reason, at Hedges we have a team dealing only with this niche work.

I am passionate about the work that I do, and find it incredibly rewarding to help people navigate through times of crises. Often, my clients are not only dealing with a stressful dispute, but they have also recently lost a loved one. I pride myself on building lasting relationships with my clients and I place a great deal of importance upon being a lawyer who clients can quickly place their trust in. My supportive and approachable style is reflected in my consistently excellent reviews.
