Ian has more than 20 years of experience in Family Law, working for firms across the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire areas.
Ian has a strong financial remedies practice, specialising in pensions for public sector workers and armed forces personnel. He has acted in farming cases and cases concerning complex business assets. He is presently building his premarital advisory and early neutral evaluation practice. He is qualified to see couples together under our one couple service, where appropriate.
His clients highly regard Ian for his knowledgeable, pragmatic, and straightforward advice, delivered in a detailed and proactive manner; they also praise his tactical ability and thoroughness in preparation.
Case Highlights:
- Successfully advising a couple under the one couple service to reach an agreement on the division of their assets involving complex share options and investment vehicles, providing both short, medium, and long-term security as those options and investments became realised.
- Advising a husband who had relocated to Australia, following a lengthy separation, in a highly complex case involving a quadriplegic child requiring 24-hour care, where the wife applied for a share of the equity in the property purchased from the trust established for the child’s care, and involving substantial defined benefit pension schemes.
- Successfully represented the husband in a divorce case where the husband was a business owner with the wife also employed in the family business, adopting a nuanced approach to prevent negatively impacting the profits, the primary source of income for the family. Proposed a tactical pitch that secured the husband a more generous settlement, extricating the wife from her employed role and removing her as director and shareholder. Utilising Non-Court Dispute Resolutions as a more appropriate way of resolving the matter than contentious court proceedings.
- Acted to shield the wife from an abusive husband and help manage her financial matters sensitively, obtaining final financial orders to put an end to the husband’s threats and financial pressure, as well as protective injunctions for her and the children.
- Efficiently settled child and financial arrangements by advising husband, who suffered from depression and had previously found acting on advice difficult. He held complex investments not easily liquidated, but settlement was promptly achieved while taking into account the asset base, significant reduction in primary income resulting from mental health, requirements to rehouse, and minimising the impact of contested proceedings to accommodate the husband’s mental health.
- Acting for a wife with significant mental health difficulties (ADHD and Autism) compounded by physical conditions, taking into account her specific needs in a sensitive matter in order to advise the wife on the nuances of the profits in a way she can understand, and discussing the best practical ways of proceeding
