According to Sport England, the Government body charged with getting the nation fitter, Bridge is not a sport.
The English Bridge Union (EBU) is challenging this by way of judicial review. The classification of whether they are a sport or not, has huge implications, possibly opening up new funding from Sport England, but also would give them VAT exemption.
The Judicial review process is not to determine the classification, but is instead a procedure by which a court can review an administrative action by a public body as to reasonableness.
Watch this space for the decision..
The Royal Courts of Justice will not be asked to decide if bridge is a sport - only whether it was reasonable for Sport England to have ruled it was not.
