How to save yourself from bad meetings – TEDx Oxford sponsored by Hedges

Dispute Resolution - 2 min read

Tedx is a platform where ideas come together to inspire change, not just an event. Hedges Law had the privilege of sponsoring this year’s tedx oxford event, where thought-provoking ideas were shared.

TEDx Oxford is only 5 days away (how did that happen!).  The latest in our series of favourite TED Talks confronts something that drains energy and resources in the work place.

The event had 12 speakers, including CEOs, entrepreneurs, professors, psychologists, writers, students, innovators and technologists to share their ideas on “X changes everything”.

Also, David Grady’s amusing talk about MAS (Mindless Acceptance Syndrome) gives you some great ideas about how to avoid a bad meeting before you even get to it!

Key insights from TEDX Oxford:

One of the standout topics was “how to save yourself from bad meetings” that most of the professionals found relatable.

Key points from the session:

1. Have clear goals

To make sure that the meeting is productive and time spent is meaningful, it should have clear goals set.

2. Adopt technology

As technology takes over the world, it is important to leverage it to communicate and coordinate.

3. Promote constructive communication

Create an atmosphere where each individual feels appreciated and heard.

4. Measure Outcomes

Rather than relying solely on attendance, assess the effectiveness of meetings by looking at tangible outcomes.

I am sure we have all been in bad meetings, regretting it the moment we arrive! (TED have even put together some data in the economic impact of meetings.)  Is there something we can do to stop them?
