Grand Designs and Planning Permissions

In what could be a precursor of things to come under the new Housing and Planning Bill currently making its way through parliament, the new development on the former MoD site in Bicester will allow people to build their own homes without the need for planning permission in a move to encourage self builders.

The plans will have to comply with a masterplan and design code, however it will allow for individuality in design to some degree but its unlikely that the estate will be too different from a usual developer lead development.

This could become more common if the Housing and Planning Bill is passed in its current form as the government are reforming the planning system to try and encourage 20,000 custom build houses by 2020.

It will be interesting to see how many people are inspired to build their own homes on the back of this development.

RESIDENTS will be able to build their own home on a Bicester estate without the need for planning permission.

Last night Cherwell District Council’s executive adopted a Local Development Order (LDO) for Graven Hill.
